The latter was created with the use of generative graphics – each sound was visually boosted on the screens around the pools reminding of the way the water surface is reacting to the touch of an athlete.

Participating countries’ presentation had an unusual form that had no athletes’ parade bearing the flags but the live screen narrating the key information about the teams. Performances of the “Molva” (“Murmur”) folk band and “Action man crew” who presented well-known dances in an unconventional contemporary adaptation together turned out very creative.

Russian Minister of Sport Oleg Matytsin was first to deliver the welcoming speech.

“Solidarity Games demonstrate that Russia is a reliable partner, we stand in solidarity with all the countries that are ready for the effective cooperation. Sport is one of the most powerful uniting factors, while the principles of sport – friendship, mutual support, and fair play – should be basic for everyone. I’m thankful to the head of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, leadership of Kazan, all organisers, presidents of the Russian Swimming, Diving, and Artistic Swimming Federations for the festival we are giving to the fans and guests being one united team. Participation of the Russian top athletes in the Games is a huge motivation for both junior athletes and spectators. International guests – athletes from 16 countries, ambassadors, international media – have a great chance to feel the atmosphere of friendship and hospitality of Tatarstan and entire Russia,” Oleg Matytsin announced.

Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin mentioned that Kazan is extremely happy to play host to the “Solidarity Games” competitions.

“Kazan is genuinely happy to welcome all guests and participants of the “Solidarity Games” first stage. We’ve been missing large-scale events and are grateful to the leadership of the country for the trust in Kazan, of the Republic of Tatarstan, all those thanks to whom Kazan is hosting another international sporting celebration. We do love sport and lead a healthy lifestyle, set an example to our children. I want this sporting event to give Kazan new friends through you. Welcome to Kazan! Let the strongest win!” Ilsur Metshin noted.

Head of the Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov expressed gratitude to the “Solidarity Games” organisers and declared the competitions open.

“For us Kazan has become the home city. The largest international and Russian competitions have been held in this amazing Aquatics Palace for many years, which is always sold out that makes us absolutely happy. I’d like to address the spectators to stand up for the athletes. Your support is invaluable. I’m confident that the tournament will be held to high standards as always. So, the “Solidarity Games” international competitions and Russian Swimming Cup are declared open,” Vladimir Salnikov.

A total of 376 sets of medals (92 in swimming, 32 – diving, 160 – artistic swimming) will be awarded at the first stage of the “Solidarity Games” international multidisciplinary competitions in Kazan.

Press service of ANO “Directorate of Sports and Social Projects”

Teams named “Sport”, “World”, “Solidarity”, and “Legends” raced in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay, giving the audience a lot of smiles and positive emotions. As its main objectives the swim set the development of inclusion in swimming and promotion of this sport in Russia.

The teams’ composition turned out truly starry. Alongside the famous swimmers, Olympic medalists Stanislava Komarova and Andrey Grechin, the swimming pool of the Aquatics Palace hosted the London Olympics champion Yury Postrigay, Zenit-Kazan volleyball players Denis Zemchenok and Aleksey Kononov, UNICS basketball player Sergey Tomashevsky, former figure skater and present-day Match TV host Emma Gadzhieva, first Russian female high diver Leyla Salyamova, artistic swimmer Milena Maretich, director of the Kazan marathon series Vadim Yangirov, winner of the All-Russian complex of the GTO festival (“Ready for Labour and Defense” sports complex) Andrey Zuev, and well-known commentator Dmitry Guberniev.

But children were certainly the main swim heroes – Master of Sport of Russia Kseniya Ilyina, Candidate Master of Sport Maksim Voytenko, second-class swimmer Radmir Fatkhullin, and third-class swimmer Sergey Podzhivotov – who represented the Republican adaptive school.
“Sport” team casting Postrigay, Zuev, Salyamova, and Fatkhullin claimed the first place but star swim had no losers, as everyone enjoyed it – both participants and spectators.

“I really liked it. I had some fear before the swim but the team supported and helped me,” Radmir Fatkhullin shared his impressions.

“Sport should unite. I am always happy to introduce children to sport, to bring something good, bright, and sporting to the youth. I did like it! I’ve never taken up swimming but it is probably the most involved sport in my life. If there are daredevils, then we are ready to give master classes in volleyball. Many thanks to the organisers for such a show. We need to introduce this format into other sports,” Zenit player Denis Zemchenok commented.

“We need to do such things more often within the framework of competitions in various sports – be it skiing, be it biathlon. This draws fans’ attention and it’s a huge thrill!” Dmitry Guberniev declared.

Spectacular drum show was followed by the welcome addresses to the spectators and participants by the First deputy minister of sport of the Republic of Tatarstan Khalil Shaykhutdinov and President of the Russian Diving Federation Stanislav Druzhinin.

“We are happy to welcome you at the Opening Ceremony of the diving competitions at the “Solidarity Games”. Yesterday swimming tournament concluded, and today we commence no less exciting and fascinating discipline. Competitors from eight countries have come to showcase their prowess, delight their supporters with elegant performances. Let the strongest win!” Khalil Shaykhutdinov claimed.

“Let me greet you all on behalf of the Russian Diving Federation. We have 120 participants here, and I am confident this will be a celebration of sport and solidarity. Tatarstan is capable of organising such celebrations, for what we are thankful to the government of the Republic of Tatarstan and President Rustam Minnikhanov. I dare say that Kazan loves diving very much, and just recently Nikita Schleikher claimed gold the Russian Championships. I’d like to wish everyone to show off their skills and talent. I declare the international diving competitions at the “Solidarity Games” open!” Stanislav Druzhinin announced.

Olympic diving champions Elena Vaytsekhovskaya and Ilya Zakharov attended the Opening Ceremony as the honorary guests.

“Kazan is always distinguished by the high standards of organising the competitions from the very first start – Universiade 2013, which is always pleasant. There is a tendency – the more years go by, the lower the level of the competitions organisation around the world. And when there is a city that holds a high bar by contrast, it is extremely good. Needless to say, Kazan is among these cities”, Ilya Zakharov noted.

“Shortly before the Solidarity Games, Russian championships took place in Penza, but it was a qualification start to some extent, therefore the athletes were not in their best form. Everybody is much more focused on the results here in Kazan. Diving is fascinating in a way that you can see whom we have now, who has joined, which reserve we have, which difficulty degree the athletes have. Anyway everybody compares each other, watching the competitions we are not performing at. So I do want this comparison to stand with us after this tournament”, Elena Vaytsekhovskaya shared her expectations about the Solidarity Games.

A total of 32 sets of medals will be awarded at the diving competitions scheduled for 26-29 July. Kazan gathered 120 participants from 8 countries, among them are 79 athletes (52 from Russia) and 41 team officials (24 from Russia). “Solidarity Games” diving competitions will feature the competitors from Armenia, Belarus, Venezuela, Vietnam, Lugansk People’s Republic, Uzbekistan, Ecuador, and Russia.

Throughout four days 145 athletes from 6 countries will be competing for the medals (Russia, Vietnam, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Donetsk People’s Republic).

Opening Ceremony started with the “Drum&Cellos” show who performed well-known music hits in an unconventional contemporary adaptation. It was followed by the welcome address by the Minister of Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan Vladimir Leonov, three-time Olympic champion Olga Brusnikina, and Vice-President of the Russian Artistic Swimming Federation Olga Pavlova.
“Solidarity Games go on! We began with swimming and diving, and today we are greeting the most beautiful and graceful sport – artistic swimming. We’ve open new history with this big tournament. Ahead are the second and third stages of the “Solidarity Games”, and hopefully their holding will become a good tradition. I thank the organisers and all participants who will give joy to us these days. Show must go on. Young athletes yet already the members of the national teams will be competing close to the Olympic champions. It is great! In Tatarstan sport is loved and understood, while artistic swimming is treated specially. Beauty, grace, filigree technique – it’s all about artistic swimming! I’d like to particularly welcome the legendary coach Tatyana Pokrovskaya! The strongest will claim the medals but it’s important to know the principles of Olympism; principles of Pierre de Coubertin are everlasting. Good luck and success, and only forward!” Olga Pavlova wished the participants.

“I am happy to be present at this amazing Aquatics Palace in Kazan. We’re going to come for the third stage of the Solidarity Games but it will be very competitive, as all the leaders will be here,” athletes shared their emotions.

“My performance made me happy, although not everything came off. The victory was hard to win, because many athletes had well-prepared programmes. By the degree of difficulty “Solidarity Games” is more challenging competition than the Russian Junior Championships. Now I will be training for the next stage,” Gleb Ryabov noted.

“Before the start, I had a lot of concerns over the platform, since the competition was really high. But I was thoroughly training, because I knew the tournament would be hard. The coach was encouraging me saying everything would be alright and that I’m able to do everything. “Solidarity Games” is a great tournament. Everybody was going point by point, it was really tough,” Darya Demidova told.

“Three gold medals: one is for 1m, another one – for 3m, and the last one – for a synchro platform dive. I may confess that only one dive came off, while the other two could have been better. Third stage of the “Solidarity Games” will be 100% more difficult. It will feature the main line-up, and I haven’t dived up to their level,” Aleksandr Cherepakhin shared his impressions about his victory.

All in all, diving tournament brought together 106 participants (77 athletes 2004-2008 birth year and 29 coaches) from three countries, including Russian Federation, Serbia, and Belarus. II stage “Solidarity Games” has brought together a total of 1,100 athletes from 22 countries.
“I’m in a good mood, it’s a working atmosphere here. I set the goal to show the maximum speed and cannot say for now how time is going to work out for me. Motivation? Not to lose any second. They run fast, while I have to be event faster,” Tokyo Olympic champion Evgeny Rylov noted.

“I was training hard. Now it’s time to warm up and tomorrow make a way to the start. I would like to get closer to my results at the international arena but would not think ahead,” Olympic 2020 silver medallist Kliment Kolesnikov told.

“I was missing the starts so much, because has a two-month rest after the “Solidarity Games”. I aspire to reach maximum results, as I healed all my injuries during the vacations and now I’m ready to get off to the start,” said Ilya Shymanovich, Belarusian swimmer who became a two-time European champion in Kazan two years ago.

“Although I was on holidays with lots of fun, I did miss the competitions. I have plenty of shot in the locker, therefore I will do my best. I’m set to work hard at the “Solidarity Games”,” world and European short-course champion Kirill Prigoda shared his expectations.

“It’s quite cold in Kazan but snow makes me so happy. My goal for the “Solidarity Games” is to get ready for the World Championships in Australia. Competition will be truly intense. I will be competing with the Russian swimmers, and they are really strong. I like the pool, here I set by personal best. Maybe this time I will also be lucky to better my time,” Syrian swimmer Omar Abbas expressed his emotions.

“A year ago I had several good results here. Now I’m in a rather good fit and happy to be here. Competition is stiff, since over 1,000 athletes are participating and the victory will be hard to win. The water in Kazan’s pool is very fast, and I like it,” Serbian Anja Crevar confessed.

II stage swimming competitions of the “Solidarity Games” kick off on 20 November.

Ivan Girev came in first in the 200 m freestyle swim (1:42.83).

"I was just a few hundredths short of breaking the Russian record. I failed at the last quarter. I made a turn and then my strength dropped. Still, I was not pursuing a goal to break the world's record. 49 seconds is something I haven't had for a long time. I wasn't able to do it last year. It is good. I'll keep training. Maybe, I'll be able to break the record after all," said Kliment Kolesnikov.
"My performance was next to the best. It inspires me with confidence. My aims at the Solidarity Games are like those of all athletes. It is to show progress and improve performance," Ivan Girev said.

"It is the best result of mine, so I am satisfied. I will keep working on that. I managed to get ahead of the world record holder, but Ilya Shymanovich says that his season is just getting started. I had not expected that I would perform like that," Danil Semyaninov told.
The Novosibirsk region team with Arina Surkova, Vitalina Simonova, Anita Grishchenko and Daria Trofimova showed the best performance at the 4x50 m individual medley distance. Maria Kameneva won gold medals in the 100 m backstroke and breaststroke, and Alina Zhmushka, Belarus, came in first in the 50 m breaststroke. Anastasia Markova took a gold medal in the 200 m butterfly stroke.

"The swim felt smooth. I had very little time to work last fall, so I'm quite pleased with the performance I've shown. Honestly, I had not expected that I'd show such great timing. My bar's quite high as usual when it comes to performing the swim itself with less focus on timing," Maria Kameneva noted.

"I didn't win at the first stage, but I did get a medal. And I'm very glad I've got a gold medal now. My goal was to put my best foot forward. It is my third time competing this season and I seem to be picking up pace," Alina Zhmushka shared her impressions of her win.
"My swimming was not that great. I'd rate my performance at 200 m butterfly 6 out of 10. I didn't like it much. The last 10 meters went very bad. I hadn't expected that. I almost drowned, but it's good that I made it," Anastasia Markova said with a smile.

A Moscow team (Ilya Shevchenko, Vladislav Grinev, Rosalia Nasretdinova, Elizaveta Susorova) took the first place in the final swim of the day – 4x50 m mixed freestyle relay.
The swimming competitions of the II stage of the Solidarity Games will resume on Tuesday.

A touch is the most important thing here. I need to collect myself first, I think. I haven't realised my win yet," Aleksandr Obsharov told.

Two records were set in the women’s 50 m butterfly swim. Winner Arina Surkova demonstrated the best result in the history of the country (24.84), while Daria Klepikova, who came in third, broke the junior record of Russia. Nika Godun scored the best result in the 100 m backstroke (58.68) and Maria Kameneva took the first place in the 50 m backstroke (26.05); the latter result also breaking a Russian record.

"I did want to break the Russian record, but it was hard to believe I could do it after yesterday's 100 m swim. I expected much less. Most of my experience has been with 100 m. I wanted to qualify for a new category and shine on the podium. The category of the international master of sports has been fulfilled, I am on the podium," Vlada Eggi noted.
"I am glad to win this race. This is my second week and third competition and I'm already tired. Plus, the training that I started a month ago was not enough. We will try harder for the April. I don't really like short course, because making turns is not my thing. I am expecting good results with the long course in April," Anna Egorova told.

There was one more record in the men’s programme. Kliment Kolesnikov broke the record in the 50 m backstroke semifinal – 22.31. Kirill Prigoda came in first in the 200 m breaststroke (2:02.70), Andrey Minakov won in the 100 m butterfly – 49.92. A Belarus team with Viktor Staselovich, Ilya Shymanovich, Anastasia Kulyashova and Anastasia Karakovskaya scored a victory in the mixed 4x50 m relay (1:38.63).

"It was time to work, I wanted to perform the best. I'm still getting in shape. My vacation was quite late. The best is yet to come. I have a goal to beat my world record. And the reality is that we need to work and build on what we have today,"Kirill Prigoda declared.

"It was not so much about the time, as to show what you have got at this distance. I came here to support my country. It is very important to take part in competitions of this level in the present state of affairs. I was preparing for this start, worked hard, tuned in to show a decent result," Andrey Minakov shared his impressions.

On Wednesday, athletes will compete for eight more sets of medals.
